The issues caused by high humidity are legion. The effects humidity can have on your house include unpleasant odors, mold growth (including black mold), and the deterioration of paint, paper, and even drywall.

The effects excessive humidity can have on your belongings are bad enough, but even worse are those it can have on your health. Allergy symptoms such as itchy eyes and sneezing as well as chronic cough, skin rashes, headaches, fatigue, and respiratory difficulties are just the tip of the iceberg of these effects.

You may imagine that your humidity issues should be "covered" by your air conditioning system. Well, ...not so fast. An air conditioning system can reduce the moisture in the air some, but it is governed by temperature; humidity has no effect on its operation. Your system will most likely lower the temperature and shut itself off well before it has reduced the humidity to the 50% level necessary to forestall the growth of normal household molds.

The fact is that in most homes, to keep the humidity at a comfortable, safe level (one able to prevent mold growth), you want a dehumidifier. And if you've decided that you do require a dehumidifier, you might wish to consider at the Frigidaire 70 pint dehumidifier.

The Frigidaire FAD704TDP dehumidifier is well designed and sturdily built. It can dehumidify an area by up to 70 pints of moisture every 24 hours , and because it is equipped with an Effortless Anti-Microbial Filter, it cleans the air of allergens, mold, mildew, even bacteria at the same time. It is also Energy Star qualified and runs at a low temperature to save energy. Besides saving on energy, this model will save you money on filters as its washable filter is reusable.

The unit comes with full-function electronic controls that enable you to easily make your selections at the touch of a button. And the unit cycles on and off to keep the humidity level after you have made your selection.

Unlike with some units, you do not have to constantly keep checking the Frigidaire to ascertain if it has to be emptied. You really don't even need to think about it as the unit alerts you when it needs to be emptied. When the time arrives, the collection container is designed to be easily accessible, but if you'd prefer, you can locate the unit near an appropriate drain, and it can "empty itself" and keep operating continuously.

The Frigidaire 70 pint dehumidifier is also sound choice if you would like to dehumidify more than one area. Its integrated casters make relocating the dehumidifier uncomplicated, while its size and the fact that it cycles on and off on its own, make it an fitting dehumidifier for differently sized rooms.

All in all reviews of this unit were very good, but they did vary when it came to noise. Several people described the Frigidaire as "almost silent." Several customers mentioned that they did hear the fan's noise, but they didn't find it too bothersome. A few customers, however, were bothered by the unit's operation and felt it somewhat noisy.

If your goal is to keep the humidity in your home at a safe and comfortable level, you want to find a dehumidifier that can do the job, one that is easy-to-use, well designed and soundly built, and, preferably, versatile enough to be used in different settings. Made by a venerable company known for quality, Energy Star certified to save you energy and money, and easily portable for use in a variety of settings, the Frigidaire 70 pint dehumidifier is a good one to think about.

While Your Thinking . . .

This video shows how to clean mildew from grout. Somethings just have to be done, but I'd rather avoid those like cleaning grout as much as possible. A good dehumidifier can help you prevent mildew growth. And remember: Mildew doesn't just grow in bathrooms.

Still Not Convinced?

I did a little research on the tools and products you'll need to have on hand to clean mildew on surfaces other than your grout. I was impressed -- and sort of horrified -- by what's required:

1. protective eyewear
2. rubber gloves
3. a respirator mask (!)
4. some soap and water (in case you touch the mildew)
5. stiff-bristled scrub brush
6. wet-day vacuum
7. trash bags
8. gallon buckets
9. mops
10. fans
11. chlorine bleach and water or a commercial mildew disinfectant
12. mild detergent for cleaning

And you have to keep on top of things because mildew can form on surfaces within 24 hours.

I really think I'd just rather prevent it.

Tips for Buying a 70 Pint Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers come in a variety of sizes - most commonly 25 to 70 pints -- so why do I start by assuming that you ought to be interested in a 70-pint dehumidifier? Because if you use a dehumidifier on a routine basis - and especially if you want to use your dehumidifier in different rooms - that's what’s recommended.

If you only need to dehumidify a small area, you would probably be satisfied with a 50-pint model, but if you have, for example, a 1200-square foot basement, you’re going to need something bigger. And even if your area is small, you also have to take into account some other factors: your climate in general, the number of windows and doors in the area, the number of people using the area, and what activities they’ll be using it for.

So the first thing to look for in a 70-pint dehumidifier, is that it is a 70-pint dehumidifier. And in case you’re wondering what the pint measurement means, it doesn’t mean that the dehumidifier holds that number of pints. It refers to the number of pints of moisture the unit can extract from the air in a 24-hour period.

So, I’ve assumed you should be considering a 70-pint dehumidifier, but before you start shopping and considering the features you want in yours, you should take a look at where you’re planning to use it. To work its best, a dehumidifier needs to have good air circulation around it. If you decide on on a back-exhaust model, you should have at least 12 inches; for a top exhaust model, you should have 8 to 10 inches of space for each side, and you should not place the unit up against a wall. So be sure you have the room.

Note: If you are short on space, one option to consider - and one you have to consider if you’re going to use your dehumidifier in different rooms - is portability. Many models offer this feature, but you do want to be sure the unit is easily portable, that it is truly designed to be moved easily from one spot to another.

The next thing you should look for in your 70-pint dehumidifier is an Energy Star label. The Energy Star certification is awarded by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to products they consider energy-efficient. What energy efficiency means to you is that your appliance will use less energy and emit fewer greenhouse gases: Energy Star appliances are between 10 and 20 percent more efficient than their uncertified counterparts.

As a bonus to saving energy, you’ll also be saving money. Surprisingly, a dehumidifier can use as much energy as appliances like refrigerators! But an Energy Star dehumidifier can save you about $20 per year, which works out to about $230.00 over its life. That savings practically pays for the unit.

So, what else should be on your checklist?

• Are the controls easy to understand and use? Does the unit display the current humidity? Does it have settings that let you choose what your room’s humidity should be?

• Is it easy to maintain? Is its collection container easy to empty? Does it have a large enough collection container? Or, even better, can it be hooked up to a hose for continuous draining?

• What kind of filter does it have and is it washable and reusable? Remember, one of the purposes of a dehumidifier is to clean bacteria, allergens, and mold and mildew from the air. So you need a good filter, and - unless you like buying replacements - one that is washable.

• How much of the operation is automated? Does the dehumidifier automatically remind you when to clean the filter (I know I wouldn’t remember?) Does it automatically restart after a power outage? Does it allow you to schedule when it turns off and on?

If you have problems with excessive humidity, a dehumidifier can make your home a lot more comfortable and healthier.

As with most things, though, if you want to get the most out of a dehumidifier, you need to do a little (just a little) homework. Before you buy, look around and find a quality model that meets your needs, is easy to operate, has the features you want, and runs efficiently and economically. It’s not that hard, and there are lots of options.
